for an adventure elopement in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom is an island nation in the northwest corner of Europe, made up of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Across the UK, there are countless beautiful places that would be perfect for an adventure elopement. If you’re planning an adventurous UK elopement, there are a few things you’ll need to know – so this guide will teach you how to elope in the UK!

Let’s dive in…

Welcome to the Adventure of a Lifetime

amber, elopement photographer

Hey there, I’m Amber! I’m your elopement photographer and planner – your one-stop-shop for absolutely everything you need for a magical, incredible elopement day.

I offer all-inclusive elopement packages for couples who want to relax and let me handle absolutely everything, as well as options for couples who like a little bit of DIY! I’ll find the perfect place for you to exchange vows, recommend vendors, help you figure out travel and lodging, make a timeline, and more – personalizing each part of your elopement day to perfectly suit the two of you. And of course, I’ll be there to take the photos and document this once in a lifetime adventure.
You aren’t like every other couple, and your wedding day shouldn’t be either! I’ll help you craft a day that’s true to you, authentic, and real, allowing you to immerse yourselves in the experience as you say your “I dos.”

First, let’s be sure we’re talking about the same thing:

What is an elopement?

Eloping means that you’re intentionally choosing to make your wedding day about what you want. Because isn’t that how it should be? You’re committing your life to one another, and yet weddings so often become about everyone but the couple. Instead of planning a party you don’t want for a day you won’t enjoy, eloping allows you to choose! Choose how you get married, where you get married, and who is there with you.

How to Legally Elope in the UK

If you’re travelling internationally for your elopement, you will need a marriage visa to elope in the UK. Next, contact the register office of the country you want to get married in to give notice that you will be doing so. You will need your passport, birth certificate, proof of address, and your entry visa, if needed. Application fees vary, but you can find your cost here!

You’ll need a registrar to officiate your elopement, along with two witnesses to sign the marriage certificate.

For couples from the US:

In certain states, you can ask your county clerk the authorization to sign your wedding license abroad. If they agree, as a registered minister, my team and I will be able to legally marry you without the hassle of a legal wedding ceremony in United Kingdom.

Why Elope in the UK?

Top 5 spots to Elope in the UK

Here are some of the best elopement locations in the United Kingdom to get you inspired!

Where to elope in the UK - the Lake District

The Lake District

The Lake District is a region, and a national park, located in northern England. With lakes and mountains to explore, there’s no shortage of beautiful scenery, whether you want an easily accessible spot or a steep mountain hike.

The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are a peaceful, tranquil area of Scotland. The mountains and forests feel so remote, and you may even stumble across some deer grazing in the meadows. There are homey bed and breakfast cabins at the base of the mountains, making this a fairytale location for an elopement.

Where to elope in the UK - the giants causeway

Giant’s Causeway

Located in northern Ireland, this coastal spot is unique because of the rocky “steps” by the sea. Legend has it that these were once part of a walkway over to Scotland for the local giants. Today, there aren’t any giants in sight, but there are amazing views of the ocean!

The Seven Sisters

On the coast of England are the Seven Sisters, a dramatic array of ancient valleys that have been eroded by the sea, forming white chalk cliffs over the water. This is one of the best places in the UK for dramatic views.

Where to elope in the UK - snowdonia

Snowdonia

As the highest mountain in Wales, Snowdonia towers over the countryside with incredible views on all sides at its summit. Take the steep but rewarding hike up, or take the train!

When to elope in the UK - fall

When to Elope in the UK

Before you decide on a date to elope in the UK, let’s talk about the weather!

WINTER

Winters in the UK are fairly mild. Unless you’re planning to elope in the mountains – in that case, you’ll likely see a lot of snow and freezing temperatures! Many trails are likely to be closed.

SPRING

Spring brings wildflower blooms to the UK, and temperatures warm up. High altitude areas can stay snow covered into summer, and early spring tends to bring a lot of rain – but if you catch a clear day, you’ll see much fewer crowds around.

SUMMER

Summer is the busiest in the UK, as tourist season picks up as temperatures get warmer. This is the best time to elope if you plan to hike, as trails will be snow free!

FALL

Fall foliage is a sight to behold in the UK. Eloping in the fall can be a great way to avoid the summer crowds, and early fall temperatures are still warm enough for outdoor adventures!

What to wear for an elopement in the UK - the shoes

What To Wear When Eloping In the UK

Being comfortable on your elopement day is so important! Because you’ll be spending the day walking, hiking, and doing whatever adventures you have planned, elopement attire that won’t get in your way is a must.

The Dress

For dresses, a loose skirt is the best option for a comfortable fit. A line or princess cut dresses are amazing, but mermaid style or trumpet dresses can be difficult to walk around in. Lighter fabrics like tulle and chiffon are great to keep you cool, while heavier fabrics like silk or velvet work amazingly in the winter.

The Shoes

You definitely don’t want blisters on your elopement day – so if you get new shoes, be sure to break them in! Hiking boots are ideal for adventures, but any comfortable shoes can work, depending on what your plan is for the day. No high heels, though!

The Suit

Layers are key, so a three piece suit is a perfect option for an elopement. You can throw the jacket on if it’s cold, or take it off if you get warm! Make sure the suit fits well and allow you to move around, so that you’re comfortable throughout the day.
