How Do You Legally Get Married Abroad?
Before you start dreaming about Iceland waterfalls or Santorini sunsets, a quick reality check: every country has its own marriage laws. Some are gloriously simple. Others require paperwork you have never heard of, a waiting period, or even residency.
The good news? Most of it is completely manageable with the right guidance. The US Embassy website is a solid starting point for each destination, and a big part of my job is making sure you never encounter a surprise on your wedding day.
I am also an ordained minister, which means I can legally sign marriage licenses. Some county clerks in the United States also allow you to designate a different location for your marriage, so I can legally marry you while you are abroad.

Gather your documents
Typically: valid passports, birth certificates, and proof of single status. Some countries need an apostille or notarized translations.
Work with a licensed officiant
In most countries, a civil registrar handles the ceremony. Where allowed, I step in directly so you have one point of contact for everything.
Register on return
Bring your official marriage certificate home. File it with your county clerk and you are fully legal on both sides of the ocean.
If I get married abroad, will it be recognized in the US?
Yes — fully. As long as you followed all the marriage requirements of the country where you tied the knot and submitted your paperwork correctly, your marriage is legal and will be recognized at home. No re-ceremony needed. No second trip to a courthouse. You just bring back your official certificate and file it with your county clerk.
