Tuscany is a region in central Italy, whose diverse landscape is home to mountains, beaches, olive groves, and vineyards. Tuscany is best known for its capital city, Florence, which features the world’s most iconic art pieces from the Renaissance.

The idyllic countryside and picturesque villages make Tuscany the perfect place for a peaceful yet adventurous elopement. If you want to elope in Tuscany and love the idea of starting your day with a hike through the mountains and ending the night sipping local wine, keep reading! This guide will tell you everything you need to know to elope in Tuscany.

Let’s dive in…

How to legally elope in Tuscany

You don’t need to live in Italy to elope in Tuscany, but if you’re traveling internationally, many couples choose to do the paperwork at home ahead of time so that they can spend the elopement day focusing on the fun part!

To get married in Italy, you will need to bring your passports and birth certificates, and schedule an appointment at the Marriage Office in the town or city in which your ceremony will take place. If you don’t speak Italian, make sure to bring a translator as well! You will receive a marriage certificate to be signed during your ceremony, which requires two witness signatures as well. If you aren’t planning on inviting any guests, your photographer and any other vendors can serve as witnesses!

Can foreigners elope in Tuscany?

Yes! Wherever you come from, and whatever your gender, religion or sexual orientation is, you can get legally married in Tuscany!

Municipal Authorization for Vineyards and Countryside Locations

For 2026–2027, elopements in Tuscany are primarily impacted by how rural land is regulated. Vineyards, olive groves, farm estates, and even scenic dirt roads are often privately owned and tied to agricultural zoning. Ceremonies and professional photography in these settings increasingly require explicit authorization from the landowner and, in some cases, notification to the local comune.
For couples planning a Tuscany elopement in 2026–2027, assuming the countryside is freely accessible is no longer realistic. Choosing estates or properties that openly welcome ceremonies ensures privacy, legality, and a far more relaxed experience in a region where beauty is deeply connected to working land.

What to wear for an elopement in Tuscany - the dress

What to wear when eloping in Tuscany

The dress

If you elope in the summer, opt for a lightweight dress, with fabrics such as chiffon or tulle. In the fall or spring, you may want to add a cape or shawl to keep warm in the evenings and mornings when temperatures drop, but layers are perfect as you can remove them when it gets warm during the day! Mermaid style dresses are beautiful, but they’re notoriously hard to move around in. Opt for princess cut or A line dresses, and keep the skirt flowy!

The shoes

For an adventure elopement, hiking boots are best – unless you’re eloping on the beach, in which case I recommend sandals or even no shoes at all! No matter what, make sure to break in your shoes before the elopement day – there’s nothing worse than blisters!

The suit

If you elope in the summer, a jacket will be heavy and hot! But in the fall and spring, layers are perfect for cooler mornings and evenings, as well as the days where it’s warmer. A button up shirt and dress pants are perfect, but bring a jacket to carry with you!

What to eat on your Tuscany elopement - Ribollita
A Rustic Elegance

Ribollita

Ribollita is a traditional Tuscan soup that epitomizes rustic Italian cooking. Originally a peasant dish, this hearty soup is made from leftover bread, cannellini beans, Lacinato kale, and other vegetables. Cooked slowly to blend the flavors, Ribollita is often drizzled with a rich olive oil and served reboiled, as its name suggests, offering a warm, comforting meal that tastes of history and home.

The Simple Perfection

Pappa al Pomodoro

Pappa al Pomodoro is a classic Tuscan dish that transforms simple ingredients into a flavorful feast. This thick bread soup combines ripe tomatoes, fresh garlic, basil, and stale Tuscan bread, simmered together to create a creamy, rich dish that is both nourishing and deeply satisfying. Often topped with a splash of extra virgin olive oil, this dish celebrates the freshness of its ingredients and is a testament to the Tuscan ability to create magic from the mundane.
