How to legally elope in Tuscany
You don’t need to live in Italy to elope in Tuscany, but if you’re traveling internationally, many couples choose to do the paperwork at home ahead of time so that they can spend the elopement day focusing on the fun part!
To get married in Italy, you will need to bring your passports and birth certificates, and schedule an appointment at the Marriage Office in the town or city in which your ceremony will take place. If you don’t speak Italian, make sure to bring a translator as well! You will receive a marriage certificate to be signed during your ceremony, which requires two witness signatures as well. If you aren’t planning on inviting any guests, your photographer and any other vendors can serve as witnesses!
Can foreigners elope in Tuscany?
Yes! Wherever you come from, and whatever your gender, religion or sexual orientation is, you can get legally married in Tuscany!
In certain states, you can ask your county clerk the authorization to sign your wedding license abroad. If they agree, as a registered minister, my team and I will be able to legally marry you without the hassle of a legal wedding ceremony in Tuscany.
Top 5 Tuscany elopement locations
Whether you want to elope amongst the mountains or in the rolling fields, you’ll find your elopement location in Tuscany! Here are a few to get you inspired.

Apuan Alps
This stunning granite mountain range is located entirely in Tuscany! You’ll have miles of hiking trails to choose from and caves to explore. Elope in the mountains at sunset, and you’ll be treated with a breathtaking view of the sky as it erupts in different shades or orange over the mountain peaks.

Mugello Valley
The Mugello Valley is close to Florence, and makes the perfect place to elope in Tuscany. The lush green valley is covered in trees and greenery, and provides a gateway to the Lake of Bilancino. There are even picnic tables around, perfect for cake cutting after the ceremony!

Elba Island
Elba Island is trendy yet laid back, and offers one of the most relaxing stays in Tuscany. The crystal clear water could rival that of the Caribbean Sea, and the white sand beaches are perfect for an elopement ceremony. The beaches are bordered by bustling towns, quiet villas, and historic ruins, all of which you could explore for days!

Monte Capanne
The tallest mountain on Elba Island offers a hike up to the 3,343 foot summit, or a cable car for those who want to relax and enjoy the views on the way up. At the summit, you’ll be greeted with a bird’s eye view of Italy’s mainland, as well as the surrounding islands!

Giglio Island
On Giglio Island, you can explore beaches, ancient castles, and picturesque villages. It’s the perfect place to elope in Tuscany for couples who love the ocean (whether you take a dip or just admire from the beach), and those who love to hike!
Municipal Authorization for Vineyards and Countryside Locations
For 2026–2027, elopements in Tuscany are primarily impacted by how rural land is regulated. Vineyards, olive groves, farm estates, and even scenic dirt roads are often privately owned and tied to agricultural zoning. Ceremonies and professional photography in these settings increasingly require explicit authorization from the landowner and, in some cases, notification to the local comune.
For couples planning a Tuscany elopement in 2026–2027, assuming the countryside is freely accessible is no longer realistic. Choosing estates or properties that openly welcome ceremonies ensures privacy, legality, and a far more relaxed experience in a region where beauty is deeply connected to working land.

When to plan your Tuscany elopement
Before you decide on a date for your Tuscany elopement, let’s talk about the weather!
For an adventure elopement – Winter
Winters in Tuscany are gloomy. Temperatures drop, and most days see rainfall and sometimes flurries of snow. While the weather isn’t ideal, if you’re willing to brave the elements on your elopement day, you will run into a lot less tourists!
The best season – Spring
Spring is the perfect time to elope in Tuscany! The weather is warm but mild, and all the restaurants and hotels begin to reopen after the cold winter. Most visitors flock to Tuscany in the summer, so if you elope in the spring, you’ll get to enjoy these locations with much more privacy!

The peak season – Summer
Summer is Tuscany’s busiest season. While it is gorgeous, unless you plan to go swimming, the temperatures can be difficult to handle during the day, as it gets very hot. The sun shines all day, making hikes and other outdoor activities more difficult!
For a cozy romance – Fall
Fall is a tranquil time in Tuscany, as visitors depart and temperatures drop to comfortable levels. You’ll also get to enjoy the fall foliage all over, and even take part in a harvesting festival as the vineyards harvest their grapes!
Did you know?
I understand that navigating unfamiliar roads in a foreign country can be daunting, especially on your special day. That’s why I go the extra mile to ensure your peace of mind and convenience. When you choose me for your elopement, you’ll enjoy the added benefit of complimentary transportation. Leave the driving and the logistics to me!
Unique things to do when you elope in Tuscany
Eloping is all about the adventure – and planning a day that’s unique to you! There are so many incredible things to do in Tuscany, but here are just a few ideas to consider for your elopement.

Wine Tasting in Chianti
Explore the rolling hills of the Chianti region, famous for its vineyards and picturesque landscapes. Embark on a guided wine tasting tour where you can visit several wineries, learn about the wine-making process, and sample some of the world’s finest Chianti wines. This romantic excursion is perfect for couples seeking a sensory experience amidst the stunning Tuscan countryside.

Hot Air Balloon Ride Over Val d’Orcia
Soar above the breathtaking Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its quintessential Tuscan landscape of cypress-lined roads and hilltop villages. A hot air balloon ride at sunrise offers a serene and unforgettable view of the rolling hills and historic towns in golden morning light, providing a magical backdrop for your elopement memories.

Cooking Class in a Tuscan Villa
Participate in a private cooking class in an authentic Tuscan villa. Learn to prepare traditional Tuscan dishes using fresh, local ingredients under the guidance of a skilled chef. This hands-on experience not only allows you to indulge in delicious cuisine but also offers a fun and engaging way to immerse yourselves in the rich culinary traditions of the region.

Visit to the Thermal Baths
Relax and unwind in one of Tuscany’s many natural hot springs, such as the Saturnia Thermal Baths. These mineral-rich waters are known for their healing properties and offer a tranquil setting for relaxation. Spending a day at the thermal baths is a soothing activity, perfect for easing pre-wedding stress and rejuvenating the body and mind amidst nature’s embrace.

What to wear when eloping in Tuscany
When it comes to eloping, you’ll need to think about how much adventuring you’ll be doing. Make sure your attire lets you sit down, walk around, and move freely! If you’re uncomfortable all day, your photos will show it, and your experience will be dampened by the discomfort – so break in your attire and your shows beforehand!
The dress
If you elope in the summer, opt for a lightweight dress, with fabrics such as chiffon or tulle. In the fall or spring, you may want to add a cape or shawl to keep warm in the evenings and mornings when temperatures drop, but layers are perfect as you can remove them when it gets warm during the day! Mermaid style dresses are beautiful, but they’re notoriously hard to move around in. Opt for princess cut or A line dresses, and keep the skirt flowy!
The shoes
For an adventure elopement, hiking boots are best – unless you’re eloping on the beach, in which case I recommend sandals or even no shoes at all! No matter what, make sure to break in your shoes before the elopement day – there’s nothing worse than blisters!
The suit
If you elope in the summer, a jacket will be heavy and hot! But in the fall and spring, layers are perfect for cooler mornings and evenings, as well as the days where it’s warmer. A button up shirt and dress pants are perfect, but bring a jacket to carry with you!
Typical food and dishes from Tuscany
You might want to integrate into your elopement day

Ribollita
Ribollita is a traditional Tuscan soup that epitomizes rustic Italian cooking. Originally a peasant dish, this hearty soup is made from leftover bread, cannellini beans, Lacinato kale, and other vegetables. Cooked slowly to blend the flavors, Ribollita is often drizzled with a rich olive oil and served reboiled, as its name suggests, offering a warm, comforting meal that tastes of history and home.
Pappa al Pomodoro
Pappa al Pomodoro is a classic Tuscan dish that transforms simple ingredients into a flavorful feast. This thick bread soup combines ripe tomatoes, fresh garlic, basil, and stale Tuscan bread, simmered together to create a creamy, rich dish that is both nourishing and deeply satisfying. Often topped with a splash of extra virgin olive oil, this dish celebrates the freshness of its ingredients and is a testament to the Tuscan ability to create magic from the mundane.

Cantucci
Cantucci, also known as almond biscotti, are traditional Tuscan cookies that are twice-baked, crunchy, and studded with almonds. These sweet treats are typically dipped in Vin Santo, a Tuscan dessert wine, making for a quintessential Tuscan dessert experience. Cantucci embody the simple yet sophisticated essence of Tuscan cuisine and offer a delightful finish to any meal.

Tips for renting a car
Renting a car in Tuscany is highly recommended for couples looking to explore the region’s vast and varied landscapes at their own pace. Tuscany’s rolling hills, vineyards, and medieval towns like San Gimignano and Montepulciano are spread out and often not easily accessible by public transport. Having a car allows you the freedom to discover these hidden gems and scenic backroads at your leisure, stopping whenever a picturesque vineyard or charming café catches your eye. Car rental agencies are available at major airports and city centers, offering a variety of options to suit different budgets and preferences. Remember to get an International Driving Permit if you’re coming from outside the EU, and be prepared for narrow, winding roads that are common in rural Tuscany.
Prepare your packing list in advance
Packing for Tuscany should include comfortable and stylish attire suitable for both countryside explorations and dining in upscale restaurants. Lightweight, breathable fabrics work well for the warm days, while a sweater or light jacket is perfect for cooler evenings. Include comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone streets and rural paths, as well as a more formal outfit for romantic dinners or wine tastings. Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect against the Tuscan sun. Consider bringing a sturdy daypack for carrying water, snacks, and other essentials during day trips. Lastly, a good camera is a must to capture the stunning landscapes and architectural beauty of the region.

The Tuscan dining schelude
A lighthearted yet practical tip for visiting Tuscany is to embrace the local dining schedule, which might be later than what you’re used to. Lunch in Tuscany typically starts around 1 PM and can last until 2:30 PM, while dinner often doesn’t begin until 8 PM or later. This schedule reflects the Italian love for leisurely meals and good conversation. It’s also common for businesses and shops in smaller towns to close in the afternoon for a few hours, so plan your shopping or errands around these times. Adjusting to this relaxed pace can enhance your enjoyment of Tuscan life, allowing you to savor each meal and experience without rush.
Formalities – do we need a visa to visit Tuscany?
Here is a map of the countries needing a visa to enter the Schengen area (which Tuscany, in Italy, is part of). If you’re from the Schengen area, the US or Australia, you just need a passport to visit and get married!

A small conclusion: Why Elope in Tuscany?

Local Cuisine
Need I say more? Pastas, soups, bread, and other Italian dishes taste even better in Italy! With local ingredients and artisan chefs all around Tuscany, you’ll be well fed during your stay, and you’ll want to try every delicious local winery! In fact, Tuscany is one of the world’s most famous destinations for wine.
