How to legally elope in the Azores
The Azores are part of Portugal, so to get married during your Azores elopement, you’ll need to follow Portugal’s marriage laws. You can get legally married abroad in Portugal, but a lot of couples choose to do the paperwork at home and not have to worry about it during their elopement! This way, on the big day, you can focus on adventuring and having a blast without worrying about logistics.
If you want to get legally married during your Azores elopement, you’ll need to get a marriage license from the Civil Registry Office, which you can do in person, or you can give someone power of attorney to do it for you. If you’re having a Catholic ceremony, a priest can do this for you. This needs to be done at least 6 weeks before the ceremony, and you’ll need a passport, or a National Identity Document if you live in the EU, along with a birth certificate and a Certificate of No Impediment. All of your documents need to be in Portuguese, so they may need to be translated.
Can foreigners elope in the Azores?
Yes! Wherever you come from, and whatever your gender, religion or sexual orientation is, you can get legally married in the Azores!
In certain states, you can ask your county clerk the authorization to sign your wedding license abroad. If they agree, as a registered minister, my team and I will be able to legally marry you without the hassle of a legal wedding ceremony in the Azores.
Top 5 Azores Elopement Locations
Choosing the place where you’ll tie the knot is so exciting – and there are countless beautiful places to elope in the Azores. Here are a few ideas!

Corvo
There are nine islands that make up the Azores, and each one offers something unique! Corvo is the smallest island, and the most remote – which means this is one of the best places for an Azores elopement if you want to find some privacy. The landscapes are lush and green, the beaches are gorgeous, and you can swim in natural pools, and see a volcanic crater!
Walking distance: depending on location
Difficulty level: 2/5 (some incline, trail)
Permit needed: no
Privacy level: Corvo is not a touristic island, making it a beautiful hidden gem for your ceremony

Flores
Flores means “flowers,” and it’s easy to see how it got its name! In the summer, this island in the Azores is covered in a rainbow of blooms, and the green landscapes are decorated with thousands of flowers. This island has some of the best pools for swimming, and if you choose this island for your elopement, be sure to check out the Seven Lakes, where turquoise lakes surround a volcanic crater!
Walking distance: depending on location
Difficulty level: 2/5 (some incline, trail)
Permit needed: no
Privacy level: Flores boasts with intimate and beautiful natural locations that are still off the beaten path

Pico
Pico is unique, because of the black volcanic soil that can be found throughout the island. It’s also home to Portugal’s tallest mountain, Mount Pico – which you can hike if you’re feeling adventurous! This is the perfect place for an Azores elopement for couples who want to hit the trails, but you can also find gorgeous beaches.
Walking distance: 8.5km – 3 hours
Difficulty level: 2/5 (some incline, trail)
Permit needed: no
Privacy level: Super secluded, only hikers from time to time

Sāo Miguel
The island of São Miguel is the most popular island in the Azores, so if you want to explore the city and get a feel for the culture of this region, this is a great place to elope! The island has a rich culture, and lots of delicious Azorean food to try. You can also get off the beaten path a little with hiking, biking, surfing, and scuba diving!
Walking distance: depending on location
Difficulty level: 2/5 (some incline, trail)
Permit needed: no
Privacy level: Some locations on Sao Miguel are still off the beaten path but bear in mind that it’s the most touristic island in the Azores

Santa Maria
This is usually the warmest and driest island in the Azores, as it’s the furthest south. Here, you’ll find yellow beaches and a red desert, and there are natural pools to swim in all over the island, as well as quaint villages to explore!
Walking distance: depending on location
Difficulty level: 2/5 (some incline, trail)
Permit needed: no
Privacy level: Super secluded

Viewpoint Controls and Rapid Weather Shifts
For 2026-2027, elopements in the Azores are increasingly shaped by how the islands manage their most scenic viewpoints. Several miradouros around crater lakes, calderas, and coastal cliffs now operate under temporary access restrictions or parking limits, especially during peak hours, to reduce congestion and protect fragile terrain.
In addition, the Azores continue to be defined by fast changing weather. Fog, wind, and rain can roll in within minutes, fully obscuring lakes or cliffs that were clear moments before. Visibility windows are often short and unpredictable.
For couples planning an Azores elopement in 2026-2027, flexibility is essential. Choosing multiple nearby locations and allowing the day to unfold around weather conditions ensures a calmer experience in an archipelago where nature sets the pace.

Do we need a permit to elope in the Azores?
Most of these wild, emerald isles are beautifully open, which means you won’t need to drown in paperwork to say “I do.” Picture yourselves beside a turquoise crater lake, beneath arching hydrangeas, on a cliff edge where the Atlantic crashes below, or in the soft steam rising from volcanic springs — the islands are your ceremony backdrop, waiting.
As long as you tread gently and respect the land, you’re free to let your vows echo wherever your hearts lead. And of course, I’ll be right there making sure everything is smooth, lawful, and filled with wonder, so you can focus on the important part: each other.

When to plan your Azores elopement
The weather is pretty great year round, but there are different experiences you can have in different seasons! Here’s what you need to know to set a date for your Azores elopement.
For a secluded elopement – Winter
Winters are pretty mild, so you can definitely have an Azores elopement this time of year. But, there is more rain, and there are more cloudy days! If you’re hiking, you can expect some mud on the trails. The ocean will also be a little more wild, so it’s not a good time for swimming or other water activities. This is the least popular time for tourism, though, so you can get more privacy!
A blooming ceremony – Spring
Spring is warmer than winter, and there is much less rain – although you’ll occasionally see some drizzle and cloudy skies. The landscapes are beautiful this time of year, lush and green and full of wildflowers because of the winter rains! This is the best time to go whale watching, because the whales come through the Azores on their migration each year.

The peak season – Summer
Summer is the most popular time to visit the Azores, because it’s usually sunny and warm the entire season! There’s little to no rain, and this is the warmest time of year, so it’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and scuba diving. There will be more people around, but it’s usually still pretty easy to find a secluded spot!
The rain season – Fall
Fall is another great time for an Azores elopement. It’s still warm, but the sun does hide behind clouds often. There is a higher chance of rain, so there are fewer people around!

Unique things to do when you elope in the Azores
The Azores is a paradise for adventure-seekers and nature lovers, offering a mix of volcanic landscapes, lush forests, and stunning ocean views. Whether you’re looking for thrilling outdoor experiences or peaceful moments in nature, these islands provide unforgettable ways to celebrate your elopement. Here are some unique activities to make your Azores elopement even more special.

Bathing in natural hot springs
Relax in the steamy, mineral-rich hot springs scattered across the Azores, especially in São Miguel. Whether soaking in the thermal pools of Terra Nostra Park, hidden within a lush botanical garden, or unwinding in the ocean-heated waters of Ponta da Ferraria, these geothermal baths offer a magical way to connect with nature and unwind after your elopement ceremony.

Exploring a lava tube cave
Step into an underground world by exploring one of the Azores’ many lava tube caves, like Gruta das Torres on Pico Island. Formed by ancient volcanic activity, these caves reveal a fascinating landscape of lava stalactites and underground tunnels. Walking through these naturally carved formations feels like an otherworldly adventure, adding a unique and mysterious touch to your elopement experience.

Whale watching in the Atlantic
The Azores is one of the best places in the world for whale watching, with over 20 different species passing through its waters. Hop on a boat tour and witness majestic sperm whales, playful dolphins, and even the occasional blue whale. Experiencing these incredible marine creatures in their natural habitat adds an unforgettable element to your elopement trip.

Hiking to a hidden crater lake
For an epic elopement backdrop, hike to one of the Azores’ breathtaking crater lakes, like Lagoa do Fogo or Lagoa das Sete Cidades. These serene volcanic lakes, surrounded by lush green mountains, create an almost fairytale-like setting. Whether you exchange vows at sunrise or take in the sweeping views together, this experience will be one of the most magical moments of your elopement adventure.

What to wear when eloping in the Azores
A traditional wedding outfit may not be a good fit for your Azores elopement. It’s really important to be comfortable, so here are some tips for what to wear!
The dress
The Azores are pretty warm, so it’s a good idea to choose a lightweight dress that won’t be too hot! For elopements, I always recommend opting for loose skirts and comfortable styles, since you’ll be walking around and adventuring all day. Make sure you can move freely!
The shoes
Shoes are just as important as the rest of your outfit! Hiking boots are best if you plan to walk a lot, and if you’re eloping in the rainy season, make sure your shoes are waterproof. If you get new shoes for the big day, make sure to break them in!
The suit
Just like with the dress, your elopement suit should be comfortable, and it shouldn’t restrict your movement. Make sure you can move, squat, bend over, and do all the things without a wardrobe malfunction!
Typical food and dishes from the Azores
You might want to integrate into your elopement day

Cozido das Furnas
Cozido das Furnas is a unique Azorean stew slow-cooked underground using volcanic steam. This traditional dish, found in the geothermal town of Furnas on São Miguel Island, includes a mix of meats, sausages, potatoes, and vegetables, all placed in a pot and buried in the hot earth for several hours. The result is a tender, flavorful meal infused with the natural heat of the island’s volcanic activity.
Lapas Grelhadas (Grilled Limpets)
Lapas Grelhadas are a must-try seafood delicacy in the Azores, consisting of limpets—small shellfish harvested from coastal rocks—grilled with garlic, butter, and a squeeze of fresh lemon. This simple yet delicious dish is a favorite among locals, often enjoyed with a glass of Azorean wine while overlooking the Atlantic.

Queijadas da Vila
Queijadas da Vila are traditional Azorean pastries originating from Vila Franca do Campo. These small, rich tarts are made with fresh cheese, eggs, sugar, and cinnamon, creating a creamy, sweet treat with a slightly caramelized top. Perfect for an afternoon snack or a celebratory dessert, they’re a delicious way to experience the islands’ unique culinary heritage.

Last details before you leave for the Azores
Ready to leave and explore the Azores? Here are some of my last bits of knowledge.
Tips for renting a car
Renting a car in the Azores is the best way to explore the islands at your own pace, as public transportation is limited and many of the most scenic spots are off the beaten path. From winding coastal roads to breathtaking viewpoints over crater lakes, having a car gives you the flexibility to stop whenever you want and discover hidden gems along the way. Whether you’re driving through the lush landscapes of São Miguel or the rugged volcanic terrain of Pico, a rental car ensures you don’t miss out on the Azores’ most stunning locations.
Prepare your packing list in advance
Packing for an elopement in the Azores means being prepared for unpredictable weather, as sunshine and rain can switch within minutes. Bring lightweight, breathable clothes for warm days, but always have a waterproof jacket and layers for cooler, misty moments. Comfortable hiking shoes are essential for exploring volcanic trails and crater lakes, while a swimsuit is a must for the island’s natural hot springs. Don’t forget sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen, and a power adapter for European-style plugs!

Watch out for the cows!
A fun fact about the Azores is that cows outnumber people on the islands, and you’ll often find them casually strolling along country roads! Agriculture and dairy farming are a huge part of life here, and the islands produce some of Portugal’s best cheeses. Be prepared to slow down while driving if you encounter a cow traffic jam—it’s just part of the Azorean charm!
Formalities – do we need a visa to visit the Azores?
Here is a map of the countries needing a visa to enter the Schengen area (which the Azores is part of). If you’re from the Schengen area, the US or Australia, you just need a passport to visit and get married!
