How to legally elope in Cyprus
You don’t need to live in Cyprus to get married there! But you will need to see a marriage officer in person at least 3 days before your ceremony, so if you’re traveling internationally, make sure to get here early! You won’t regret it – that just means more time to explore the island! It’s important to note that the normal waiting period is 15 days – but for £247, you can cut that down to three days.
When you apply for your marriage license, make sure to bring your passport and birth certificate, and photocopies of the photo page of both your passports, and your witnesses’ passports. A mayor of Cyprus can officiate your elopements, and you will need two witnesses – the only requirement is that they be over 18, so your photographer and any other vendors can double as witnesses!
Can foreigners elope in Cyprus?
Yes! Wherever you come from, and whatever your gender, religion or sexual orientation is, you can get legally married in Cyprus!
In certain states, you can ask your county clerk the authorization to sign your wedding license abroad. If they agree, as a registered minister, my team and I will be able to legally marry you without the hassle of a legal wedding ceremony in Cyprus.
Top 5 Cyprus elopement locations
Everywhere you look, the scenery in Cyprus will take your breath away. You can’t go wrong choosing a location on the island, but here are some of my favorite places where you can elope in Cyprus.

Avakas Gorge
Some of the most unique and undisturbed landscapes can be found at Avakas Gorge. Over centuries of erosion, the limestone has been carved away to form slot canyons that can be hiked through. If you elope in Cyprus, exploring the Avakas Gorge can be a once in a lifetime experience – but make sure your hiking boots are waterproof! You might have to do some wading.

Caledonia Waterfall
The Caledonia Waterfall is one of the highest falls in Cyprus, and requires just a short hike to get there! You’ll walk through a serene forest with views of the Troodos Mountains in the distance, and be greeted with the rushing waterfall when you reach your destination.

Cape Greco
A stunning national park in Cyprus, Cape Greco offers views of sea caves and unique rock formations that have been molded by the blue waves of the Mediterranean Sea. You can stand on top of the rocks and watch the crashing ocean below, or take a boat tour into the caves!

Limassol Sand Dunes
The sand dunes are one of the most remote locations to elope in Cyprus. Their unique gray color and seemingly never ending expanse of undisturbed sand make them an amazing place to tie the knot, away from the hustle and bustle. You might even spot a few turtles nesting amongst the dunes!

Cedar Valley
Just like the name suggests, this idyllic space is covered in cedar trees native to Cyprus. The forest will make you feel as though you stepped into a storybook, and there are hiking trails perfect for exploring, and picnic tables near by perfect for post-ceremony cake cutting!
When to plan your Cyprus elopement
This Mediterranean island is known for mild weather, so any time of year that you decide to elope in cyprus will be incredible! But, there are a few things you should know.
For a mountain ceremony – Winter
Winters in southern Cyprus rarely fall below about 14 degrees C (57 F), but rainfall is heavier, with about 11 days of rain each month. However, if you venture north, you’ll be greeted with mountains and high elevations – which means snow! Through the winter and into early spring, the Troodos Mountains are an amazing destination for skiing and snowboarding.
For hiking lovers – Spring
Spring in Cyprus is a little chilly for swimming, but warm enough to comfortably spend the day outside! The weather is perfect for hiking, and spring is less crowded than summer.

The peak season– Summer
For those who love the beach, summer is the perfect time to elope in Cyprus. Temperatures will be high, and jumping in the water is the perfect way to cool off! The mountains will be perfect for hiking – by late July, most of the snow will be gone, and hiking trails will be open.
For a cozy elopement – Fall
Fall is a tranquil time in Cyprus, as visitors depart and locals are back to school. Early fall is a perfect time to elope, as the weather is still warm, but crowds are much thinner!
Seasonal Heat and Midday Ceremony Restrictions
For 2026–2027, elopements in Cyprus are primarily shaped by extreme summer heat rather than legal changes. During peak months, especially July and August, midday outdoor ceremonies are increasingly discouraged or restricted at beaches, archaeological sites, and open landscapes due to health and safety concerns.
For couples planning a Cyprus elopement in 2026–2027, timing is key. Early morning or sunset ceremonies, or choosing shoulder season dates, ensures a more comfortable and sustainable experience in a destination where climate now strongly influences how and when ceremonies can take place.

Unique things to do when you elope in Cyprus
Cyprus is a Mediterranean gem, offering an incredible mix of history, adventure, and natural beauty. Whether you’re drawn to its ancient ruins, crystal-clear waters, or breathtaking mountain landscapes, this island provides unforgettable experiences to complement your elopement. Here are some unique activities to make your Cyprus elopement even more special.

Swim at Aphrodite’s Rock
According to legend, Aphrodite, the goddess of love, emerged from the sea at this iconic rock formation. A swim in the waters surrounding Aphrodite’s Rock is said to bring eternal love and beauty, making it the perfect romantic ritual for newlyweds. Whether you take a dip together or simply admire the sunset from the shore, this mythical spot adds a magical touch to your elopement.

Explore the Troodos Mountains on a wine tour
Venture into the Troodos Mountains, where picturesque vineyards and charming villages await. Take a guided wine tour through Cyprus’ oldest wineries, sampling local varieties like Commandaria, one of the world’s oldest wines. The stunning mountain scenery and cozy wineries create a peaceful and intimate atmosphere, ideal for celebrating your love.

Go off-roading in the Akamas Peninsula
For adventurous couples, an off-road safari in the Akamas Peninsula is a thrilling way to experience Cyprus’ rugged beauty. Explore dramatic sea caves, crystal-clear lagoons, and hidden beaches as you ride through this protected nature reserve. With its untouched landscapes and breathtaking coastal views, this wild escape makes for an unforgettable elopement adventure.

Discover the ancient city of Kourion
Step back in time as you explore the ancient city of Kourion, one of Cyprus’ most impressive archaeological sites. Walk through the ruins of Roman villas, an amphitheater overlooking the sea, and stunning mosaics that date back thousands of years. Saying your vows surrounded by history and panoramic ocean views makes this experience truly one-of-a-kind.

What to wear when eloping in Cyprus
You want to look your best on your elopement day, but don’t forget to be comfortable too! You definitely don’t want to spend your wedding day tugging at your clothes or nursing blisters on your feet, and if you’re not happy, your photos will show it!
The dress
Cyprus is pretty warm year round, unless you elope in the mountains. I recommend layers, and thin fabrics like tulle or chiffon that won’t weigh you down. Choose styles that are easy to sit and walk around in – put that mermaid cut dress back! A line and princess cuts are amazing, and super comfortable!
The shoes
For an adventure elopement, hiking boots are best – unless you’re eloping on the beach, in which case I recommend sandals or even no shoes at all! No matter what, make sure to break in your shoes before the elopement day – there’s nothing worse than blisters!
The suit
During the day, a dress shirt and nice pants will be amazing, but as the sun starts to set, you’ll want to have a jacket or tux along. Layer up to be prepared for all weather!
Typical food and dishes from Cyprus
You might want to integrate into your elopement day

Souvla
Souvla is a traditional Cypriot dish consisting of large chunks of marinated pork, lamb, or chicken, slowly grilled over a charcoal fire. Unlike Greek souvlaki, which uses smaller skewered pieces, souvla is cooked on larger skewers, allowing the meat to stay juicy and tender. This flavorful dish is often enjoyed at festive gatherings and pairs perfectly with fresh salads, dips, and warm pita bread.
Halloumi
Halloumi is Cyprus’ most famous cheese, known for its unique ability to be grilled or fried without melting. Made from a mix of sheep’s and goat’s milk, it has a slightly salty and chewy texture that makes it a delicious appetizer or side dish. Often served with watermelon in the summer or drizzled with honey for a sweet twist, halloumi is a must-try when visiting Cyprus.

Loukoumades
Loukoumades are Cyprus’ version of honey-soaked doughnuts, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. These bite-sized treats are deep-fried to golden perfection and then drizzled with honey syrup, cinnamon, or crushed nuts. Often enjoyed at festivals and special occasions, loukoumades are a delicious way to end a meal on a sweet note.

Tips for renting a car
Renting a car in Cyprus is the best way to explore the island’s diverse landscapes, from its golden beaches to its mountainous villages. While cities like Nicosia and Limassol are walkable, many of the island’s most stunning elopement spots—like the Troodos Mountains, Akamas Peninsula, and hidden coastal coves—are best accessed by car. Roads are well-maintained, but keep in mind that Cyprus follows left-side driving, a remnant of its British colonial past. Having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to discover the island at your own pace, stopping for scenic views and spontaneous adventures.
Prepare your packing list in advance
Packing for Cyprus means preparing for plenty of sunshine and warm Mediterranean breezes. Lightweight, breathable clothing is essential, especially during the summer months when temperatures can soar. A swimsuit is a must for the island’s beautiful beaches and natural hot springs, while comfortable walking shoes are perfect for exploring ancient ruins and mountain trails. Sunglasses, a sun hat, and high-SPF sunscreen will protect you from the strong sun, and don’t forget a light jacket for cooler evenings, especially if visiting in spring or fall.

Some history about Cyprus
Cyprus is home to an abandoned international airport in Nicosia, frozen in time since the Turkish invasion in 1974. The airport, once the island’s main gateway, now sits eerily empty in a UN buffer zone, a reminder of Cyprus’ divided history. While you can’t visit the airport itself, you may notice the unique situation of Nicosia—the last divided capital in the world—with Greek Cypriots on one side and Turkish Cypriots on the other, each with their own culture, cuisine, and traditions.
Formalities – do we need a visa to visit Cyprus?
Here is a map of the countries needing a visa to enter the Schengen area (which Cyprus is part of). If you’re from the Schengen area, the US or Australia, you just need a passport to visit and get married!

A small conclusion: Why elope in Cyprus?

Gorgeous landscapes
Cyprus’ mild weather makes it an incredible elopement destination year round. When you see the crystal clear beaches, delicately carved sea caves, and towering, snow-capped mountains, it’ll be hard to say no to eloping in Cyprus!

Local cuisine
Halloumi cheese is one of the most popular delicacies local to Cyprus, and you’ll also find some of the freshest kebabs, olives, hummus, and seafood that will leave you wanting more. Local bakeries provide fresh bread and pastries, and you can’t miss the local beer and wine!

Cultural treasures
Cyprus is home to treasures of mythology, culture, and art. It is said that many writers have found inspiration on the island, and you can still visit the locations where they sat to write. The old architecture and ruins reflect the Byzantine and Ottoman empires that once inhabited the land.
