Waterfalls crashing into mossy canyons, glaciers stretching toward the horizon, black sand beaches shaped by volcanic eruptions. All of it feels raw, powerful and endlessly cinematic.
What makes it work so well for elopements is not just the scenery. It is the scale. In a single day, you can stand beneath a waterfall, walk a black sand beach, and watch steam rise from a geothermal valley. And because the country is so vast, finding a quiet corner far from crowds is genuinely easy with the right planning. The only witnesses: mountains, wind, and each other.

How to choose the right region of Iceland for your elopement
Iceland looks small on a map, but the landscapes shift drastically from one region to another. Some areas are known for towering waterfalls and black sand beaches, others feel quieter, with remote mountains, deep fjords or wide volcanic valleys. Where we go shapes how the whole experience feels. These are the regions I keep coming back to.
The South Coast
One of the regions I come back to the most. Within a short stretch of road you move between powerful waterfalls, black sand beaches, glacier lagoons filled with icebergs and moss covered volcanic cliffs.
Snæfellsnes Peninsula
A condensed version of everything Iceland has to offer. Volcanic beaches, lava fields, cliffs, glaciers and small fishing villages, all within a short drive, so you get real variety without spending the whole day in the car.
The Icelandic Highlands
The wild heart of Iceland. Colorful mountains, geothermal valleys, lava fields and endless open space that makes everything feel quieter and more remote. Reachable only in summer, which is part of what I love about it.
The Westfjords
One of the most untouched regions. Steep fjords, towering cliffs, quiet fishing villages and vast open landscapes. Everything feels wilder, but also calmer, like you have the space to just exist in it without interruption.
The Eastfjords
A quieter, slower side of Iceland. Steep mountains dropping into the ocean, winding coastal roads and small seaside villages that feel almost untouched. The days slow down and the drives become part of the experience.
Reykjavik and the Golden Circle
So much is accessible within a short distance. Waterfalls, geysers and volcanic landscapes all close by, which makes it easy to build a full day without long drives. Popular, but with the right timing I still find quieter, hidden spots.

Insider knowledge that makes it all seamless
How to legally get married in Iceland
Iceland is one of the easiest countries in the world for foreign couples to marry legally, which is a big part of why so many choose to elope here. The process is straightforward once you know the steps. Requirements can change, so always confirm the current details directly with the District Commissioner before you travel.
Prepare your documents
You will typically need valid passports, birth certificates, and a certificate of marital status showing you are both free to marry. If either of you was previously married, add the divorce decree or a death certificate. Documents in other languages usually need an official translation.
Submit them to the District Commissioner
Your documents are reviewed by the District Commissioner, who confirms you meet the legal conditions and issues a marriage licence. The Vestmannaeyjar office handles marriages for visiting couples and is used to working with elopements from abroad.
Hold your ceremony
Your ceremony is led by an authorised officiant, civil or religious. Many couples choose a humanist celebrant for a warm, personal ceremony in the landscape, with no religious framing. I help match you with the right officiant and handle the coordination.
Receive your marriage certificate
After the ceremony, your marriage is registered and your certificate issued by Registers Iceland. For it to be recognised in your home country, you usually request an international version with an apostille through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.
For most locations, no.
The vast majority of natural sites are open for an intimate ceremony with no permit needed. A few protected areas, private land or national parks can ask for permission or have seasonal rules, and I take care of those when they apply. Beat the crowds
The famous spots fill up midday in summer. We shoot at sunrise, late evening, or in shoulder season, and I always know a quieter alternative to the big names when we need one.
Respect the weather
Iceland's weather turns fast. I watch vedur.is constantly and build flexibility into the plan, so a shift in the forecast becomes a better location, not a ruined day.
Protect the land
The moss can take decades to recover from a single footprint. We stay on marked paths, leave no trace, and treat every spot so the next couple finds it just as untouched.
Practical travel tips
Rent the right car
A 2WD is fine for the Ring Road in summer. For the Highlands you need a proper 4x4. I recommend Blue Car Rental.
Pack for four seasons
