Elope in Croatia with an award-winning photographer and elopement planner
Planning an elopement in Croatia surrounded by turquoise Adriatic waters, historic stone towns, and wild island landscapes? I help couples design unforgettable Croatia elopements while documenting every moment as their photographer.
All year round
Yes, it’s very easy for anyone to get married legally in Croatia.
Croatia boasts one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines, but it is also home to the smallest town globally, Hum, which has a population varying from 17 to 23 people.
Pssst…You don’t have to carry this.
Eloping abroad can quickly turn into spreadsheets, permits, weather questions and second-guessing.
Instead, imagine every location vetted, every timeline built around real light and travel flow, and the entire experience both designed and photographed at an award-winning level.
You bring your story. The planning and the artistry are already handled.

How to legally elope in Croatia
You can get legally married when you elope in Croatia, but there’s a lot of paperwork! Here’s what you need:
– A valid passport
– A birth certificate translated into Croatian
– A sworn statement from the embassy that you are free to marry, authenticated in Croatia
You will need to send in copies of your documents beforehand, then show originals once you get to Croatia. The only ceremonies that are legally recognized in Croatia are those performed by a Matičar (a local official), so getting legally married can be a little tricky – you can also do the paperwork at home, then have a symbolic elopement ceremony to make things easier!
Can foreigners elope in Croatia?
Yes! Wherever you come from, and whatever your gender, religion or sexual orientation is, you can get legally married in Croatia!
In certain states, you can ask your county clerk the authorization to sign your wedding license abroad. If they agree, as a registered minister, my team and I will be able to legally marry you without the hassle of a legal wedding ceremony in Croatia.
Top 5 Croatia elopement locations

Plitvice Lakes National Park
This is definitely one of the most amazing places to elope in Croatia! The national park has scenic turquoise lakes surrounded by forests and hills, and connected by tumbling waterfalls. There are wooden footbridges that go around the park, and you could explore forever!

Klis Fortress
This Croatia elopement location is unique, with a fortress that sits on a limestone bluff, with mountains in the distance and the city below. If you want to tie the knot in a castle, this is the place for you!

Zlatni Rat
You can’t go to Croatia without seeing the beaches, and if you want to get married on one, Zlatni Rat is a really amazing spot! The “golden cape,” made of white pebbles, creates an outcropping into the crystal clear ocean, with pine trees and towering cliffs behind it. You can swim, windsurf, or just enjoy the view!

Dragon’s Eye Lake
This gorgeous lake is surrounded by mountains, and connects to the ocean by underwater channels through the limestone. There are a lot of legends surrounding it, because of geothermal activity underneath the lake that makes the water at the bottom of the lake (and sometimes the top too) warm!

Stara Baska
This village is located on an island off the coast of Croatia, and is a stunning, remote place for an elopement. The beaches are surrounded by mountains and rolling hills, and the cute town is a great place to explore and get to know the local culture!

Expanded Coastal Protection and Permit Enforcement
For 2026-2027, elopements in Croatia are increasingly shaped by stricter coastal protection measures, particularly along the Adriatic coast and on popular islands such as Hvar, Vis, and Korčula. Municipalities have reinforced rules around ceremonies and professional photography on beaches, old towns, and waterfront areas. Even symbolic elopements with no guests may now require prior authorization or location fees, especially during the summer season.
In addition, several historic centers and natural parks operate under visitor caps, time slot systems, or seasonal restrictions to manage overtourism and preserve fragile environments. Enforcement has become more consistent, with local authorities actively monitoring high traffic areas and relocating unpermitted ceremonies.
For couples planning a Croatia elopement in 2026-2027, flexibility and foresight are essential. Choosing quieter islands, shoulder season dates, or private venues, and handling permits in advance, helps preserve intimacy in a country where beauty and protection increasingly go hand in hand.

When to plan your Croatia elopement
The coastal regions of Croatia see pretty mild weather, but inland can get more dramatic! Here’s what you need to know about the best times to elope in Croatia.
For an adventurous elopement – Winter
Inland areas, especially in the mountains, get pretty cold and snowy! But the coast, though a little chillier, is still pretty mild, and the weather can be great for outdoor adventures. This is the least busy season, so you won’t see as many people around.
The best season – Spring
Spring is one of the best times to elope in Croatia, because it’s not as crowded as summer, but the weather is warm and sunny! Keep in mind that in the mountains, it’s usually snowy until later in the season, but you can definitely enjoy the beaches.

The peak season – Summer
Though the weather is amazing, perfect for swimming or hitting the beach, this is the busiest time in Croatia, which means it’ll be harder to get some privacy! June can be a good time to elope, as the tourist season really picks up in July, but be prepared to avoid the crowds.
For the best hikes – Fall
Fall is another amazing time to elope, after the busy season is over but the weather is still warm. The coastal areas are still warm and sunny, but inland, it can get chilly in the mountains, so think about what you want to do on your elopement day before you set a date!

What to wear when eloping in Croatia
The dress
Depending on where you elope, you’ll need to dress for the weather. On the coast, it’ll be warm, while mountainous areas are chillier – so layers are great! For warm weather, stick with light, airy fabrics, and for cooler climates, opt for a shawl, jacket, or cape to help you stay warm. Comfort is also incredibly important – make sure your dress has a loose skirt that allows you to move freely!
The shoes
Shoes are so important! Hiking boots are best if you plan to hit the trails, but for beach elopements, sandals, or even going barefoot, can be a better option. Think about what you plan to do, and make sure to break in new shoes before the big day!
The suit
Suits make layering easy, which is great for a Croatia elopement! Make sure that it fits well, is comfortable, and allows you to move easily. For beach elopements, you might opt for a more casual vibe, with dress pants and a button up shirt.
Typical food and dishes from Croatia
You might want to integrate into your elopement day

Crni Rižot – Black Risotto
Black Risotto, known locally as Crni Rižot, is a striking seafood dish commonly found along the Croatian coast. This risotto gets its distinctive color from squid or cuttlefish ink, which also imparts a rich, briny flavor. It typically includes squid, mussels, and other seafood, cooked with garlic, red wine, and olive oil. The dish is both a visual and culinary experience, offering a taste of the Adriatic Sea.
Peka
Peka is a traditional Croatian dish of meat and vegetables, such as veal, lamb, octopus, or chicken, cooked with potatoes and other vegetables under a bell-like dome. The dome is traditionally made of iron and the dish is cooked over the embers of a fireplace. As the ingredients slow-cook, they infuse with herbs like rosemary and bay leaves, creating tender, flavorful meat and deliciously seasoned vegetables in this comforting one-pot meal.

Fritule
Fritule are small, sweet fried dough balls that are a festive Croatian treat, especially popular during Christmas time but enjoyed year-round. These bite-sized pastries are flavored with lemon zest, raisins, and sometimes a splash of rum. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, Fritule are often dusted with powdered sugar and serve as a delightful, shareable dessert or snack.

Last details before you leave for Croatia
Ready to leave and explore Croatia? Here are some of my last bits of knowledge.
Tips for renting a car
Renting a car in Croatia is highly recommended to explore the country’s stunning coastline and beautiful inland areas at your own pace. With a rental car, you can discover secluded beaches, charming hilltop villages, and historic sites that are often inaccessible via public transport. Car rental agencies are conveniently located at airports and major urban centers, offering a range of vehicles suitable for the diverse Croatian terrain. Opting for a car rental allows for greater flexibility in your travel plans, enabling you to experience Croatia’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty without the constraints of scheduled tours or bus timetables.
Prepare your packing list in advance
When packing for Croatia, include lightweight, breathable clothing suitable for warm Mediterranean weather, along with a swimsuit for enjoying the beautiful beaches and islands. Pack comfortable walking shoes for exploring historic cities and natural parks, and a stylish outfit for dining out or nightlife. Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection. A light jacket or sweater may be needed for cooler evenings, especially if visiting outside of summer. Lastly, bring a camera to capture the scenic views and an adapter for European power outlets.

Elope with “fjaka”
One important and somewhat amusing aspect to know before visiting Croatia is the concept of “fjaka.” A cherished part of local culture, especially along the Dalmatian Coast, fjaka is the blissful state of aspiring to do absolutely nothing. More than just laziness, it is a revered mindset and a way to find peace by slowing down in life’s hectic pace. While it might initially challenge visitors from fast-paced cultures, embracing fjaka can enhance your understanding of the local lifestyle and even add a layer of relaxation to your elopement. So, when in Croatia, remember to sometimes just sit back, relax, and enjoy the art of doing nothing!
Formalities – do we need a visa to visit Croatia?
Here is a map of the countries needing a visa to enter the Schengen area (which Croatia is part of). If you’re from the Schengen area, the US or Australia, you just need a passport to visit and get married!

Latest Croatia elopements I planned and photographed
A small conclusion: Why Elope in Croatia?

Blissful beaches
The beaches in Croatia are absolutely incredible, with turquoise blue water, white sands, and sunshine! The water is clear, and you can see marine life all around you.

Magnificent mountains
Inland, you’ll find more incredible nature in Croatia – from magical waterfalls to towering mountain peaks. Croatia isn’t as popular with travelers as some other European countries, so the nature is well preserved and absolutely stunning!

Rich culture
The culture in Croatia is a mixture of its own traditions, along with Greek and Roman civilizations. You’ll see expressions of their heritage through music, dance, festivals, art, food, and architecture, and exploring the cities and historic sites is an experience you’ll never forget.
