How to legally elope in FInland
Getting legally married abroad can be complicated, so if you don’t live in Finland, it’s often easier to do the paperwork at home! Don’t worry – signing the papers isn’t what makes your marriage real – exchanging vows during the ceremony does. So, you can get legally married before or after your ceremony, and spend your elopement day focusing on the fun parts!
If you want to get legally married during your Finland elopement, here’s what you’ll need. First, you need to get a document that states there are no legal impediments to your marriage. In the US, these documents don’t exist, so if you’re traveling from the states, you can instead get an affidavit that says you aren’t currently married, and if you’ve been married before, that that marriage is legally terminated. To get a marriage license in Finland, you’ll apply with the Town Hall, at least 8 weeks before your wedding ceremony. You’ll need to send certified copies of your passport and of the certificate of no impediment, and they must arrive at least 4 weeks before the ceremony.
Can foreigners elope in Finland?
Yes! Wherever you come from, and whatever your gender, religion or sexual orientation is, you can get legally married in Finland!
In certain states, you can ask your county clerk the authorization to sign your wedding license abroad. If they agree, as a registered minister, my team and I will be able to legally marry you without the hassle of a legal wedding ceremony in Finland.

Towering trees, frozen landscapes, and serene silence set the stage for an intimate celebration. With nature’s magic as your backdrop and the Northern Lights as your audience, Riisitunturi offers an awe-inspiring canvas for an unforgettable winter elopement.

Nuuksio National Park is actually within the Helsinki metropolitan area, and even accessible by public transportation! This natural haven is perfect for couples looking for a convenient place to elope in Finland, and offers nature trails through forests, lakes, cliffs, and valleys.

If you want to hike on your elopement day, there’s no better place than Halti – the highest peak in Finland! In the summer, you can hike to the peak and enjoy the forests and rocky scenery along the way, and be rewarded by sweeping views at the top.

Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park
This national park is located in Lapland, and is home to arctic wildlife. The mountains create a chain of peaks, and there are plenty of beautiful trails to explore. This is also one of the best places to see the Northern Lights, because of the remote location!

Korouoma National Park
Korouoma National Park is one of the best places to elope in Finland, offering an iconic wintery landscape. In the colder months, you can see frozen waterfalls, and in the summer, you can hike the mountain trails and relax amongst the rugged beauty!
When to plan your Finland elopement
Finland is gorgeous anytime of year – but most people associate it with the snow and cold weather, so if winter isn’t your thing, you can still elope in Finland! Here’s what you can expect throughout the year.
Great for Northern Lights – Winter
Winter is dark and cold, but the landscapes are incredibly beautiful. Snow covers most of the country, and you can ski, ice skate, snowmobile, or snowshoe the trails! It’s stunning, and if you want to elope in a winter wonderland, Finland is perfect. Winter is also the best time to see the Northern Lights, because it’s darker.
For the best hikes – Spring
Northern Finland is colder than the south part of the country, so while spring usually starts around April in the south, the north is usually covered in snow until summer begins! Spring is a great time to hike and explore in the south, or in the north if you want to experience the snow in warmer temperatures than winter.

The warmest – Summer
Summer is magical in Finland – the weather is warm and sunny, and the landscapes are vibrant, blooming with wildflowers. The days are long (in the north, the sun doesn’t set at all in June!), so this is the best time to elope in Finland if you want to hike and enjoy the outdoors. It’s the busiest time of year, as locals and visitors flock to the cottages and parks.
To avoid crowds – Fall
The fall foliage makes this time of year great for a Finland elopement! It’s also less popular for travelers, so this can be a good way to avoid crowds. It does start getting cold pretty fast, especially in the north where snow usually starts falling in October.
Seasonal Light Extremes and Ceremony Timing
For 2026–2027, elopements in Finland are primarily shaped by extreme seasonal light conditions. In summer, the midnight sun brings continuous daylight, which affects both ceremony timing and privacy in popular nature areas. In winter, daylight windows can be very short, especially in Lapland, limiting outdoor ceremonies to a narrow timeframe and increasing dependence on weather conditions.
For couples planning a Finland elopement in 2026–2027, understanding light cycles is essential. Choosing the right season and aligning expectations around timing allows the experience to feel intentional rather than constrained in a country where light defines the rhythm of the day.

Indulge in a quintessential Finnish tradition by relaxing in a traditional sauna before taking an exhilarating plunge into an icy lake. This invigorating ritual not only refreshes your body and soul but also creates memorable moments of shared adventure, perfect for couples looking to blend romance with local culture.

Midnight Sun picnic
Celebrate your love under the mesmerizing glow of the Midnight Sun, a natural phenomenon unique to the Finnish summer. Enjoy a picnic in the great outdoors where daylight lasts nearly 24 hours, creating a dreamlike atmosphere that captures the carefree, joyful spirit of Finland’s endless summer days.

What to wear when eloping in Finland
The dress
When it comes to elopement dresses, I recommend looser skirts that allow for more movement. Whether you’re hiking, skiing, or just exploring, it’ll be so much nicer to be able to move freely! To stay warm, you can add base layers, or a cape, shawl, or jacket on top.
The shoes
Hiking boots are ideal for eloping in Finland. They’ll be good for all your adventures, and they’ll also keep you warm! If you get new shoes, be sure to break them in before the big day.
The suit
Elopement suits are easy to layer, so this means it’s easier to stay warm! You can add base layers as well if you’re eloping in the colder months. Just like with a dress, make sure your elopement suit fits you well and is comfortable, so that you can enjoy your day to the fullest!
Typical food and dishes from Finland
You might want to integrate into your elopement day

Karjalanpiirakka
Karjalanpiirakka, or Karelian pasties, are traditional Finnish pastries made with a thin, rye-based crust and filled with rice, potatoes, or carrots. These savory treats are a beloved staple in Finnish cuisine, often enjoyed at breakfast or as a snack, typically served with a dollop of egg butter. Their delicate texture and earthy flavors offer a delicious glimpse into Finland’s culinary heritage.
Lohikeitto
Lohikeitto is a classic Finnish salmon soup that features tender salmon, potatoes, and a creamy broth infused with fresh dill. This warming dish is a favorite during the colder months, providing both comfort and nourishment with every spoonful. Its rich, velvety consistency paired with the subtle flavor of salmon perfectly represents the simple yet satisfying nature of traditional Finnish fare.

Mustikkapiirakka
Mustikkapiirakka, a delightful Finnish blueberry pie, captures the essence of summer with its burst of wild blueberries encased in a tender, buttery crust. The pie balances sweet and tart flavors in a way that is both refreshing and indulgent, making it a popular dessert during family gatherings and local celebrations. Each slice of mustikkapiirakka offers a taste of Finland’s abundant natural bounty and time-honored baking traditions.

Tips for renting a car
Renting a car in Finland is a fantastic way to truly experience its vast wilderness and untouched landscapes. While urban centers like Helsinki have reliable public transit, having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to venture into remote areas, explore serene lakes, dense forests, and even chase the Northern Lights at your leisure. With well-maintained roads and plenty of scenic routes, a rental car allows you to craft your own adventure and create unforgettable elopement memories in the heart of Finnish nature.
Prepare your packing list in advance
Packing for an elopement in Finland calls for versatility and preparedness for unpredictable weather. Regardless of the season, layering is key—bring moisture-wicking base layers, warm sweaters, and a durable jacket for cooler evenings, along with comfortable waterproof footwear for exploring both urban areas and the great outdoors. If you’re visiting during the winter, include thermal wear, gloves, a hat, and a scarf to keep you cozy, while summer visits will require lighter clothing paired with a light jacket or sweater. Also, don’t forget essentials like a universal power adapter and a camera to capture the stunning Finnish scenery.

The concept of “sisu”
In Finland, “sisu” embodies the Finnish spirit of determination and resilience—qualities that often come with a healthy dose of dry humor. Locals are known for their understated wit and remarkable endurance in facing even the harshest winters, and you’ll quickly learn that coffee breaks are taken very seriously in the world’s largest coffee-drinking nation. Embracing this blend of practicality and humor will not only help you adapt to the Finnish way of life but also add a lighthearted twist to your elopement adventure in this uniquely resilient country.
Formalities – do we need a visa to visit Finland?
Here is a map of the countries needing a visa to enter the Schengen area (which Finland is part of). If you’re from the Schengen area, the US or Australia, you just need a passport to visit and get married!

A small conclusion: Why elope in Finland?

The happiest people in the world
The residents of Finland have been named the happiest people in the world for several years in a row – so when you elope, you’ll see what that’s all about! Along with the natural beauty and vibrant cities you’ll find in Finland, talking with locals and experiencing the culture is a must do when you visit.

Millions of saunas
There’s no consensus about the exact number of saunas in Finland – some sources say over two million, some say over three million! But, what we do know is that there are a lot of them, so during your Finland elopement, you can take some time to relax and unwind after your adventures.

The Northern Lights
Another amazing reason to get married in Finland is the Northern Lights! The colorful display makes for a stunning night sky, and getting to see it is an unforgettable experience. The Aurora Borealis is visible about 200 nights a year, with winter being the best season to spot them.
