How to legally elope in Fiji
You don’t have to live in Fiji to get married here! If you’re traveling for your elopement, you’ll need to send copies of these documents to the Registry office at least two weeks before your ceremony:
- Birth certificate
- Passport
- Certificate of No Impediment – but you don’t need this if you’re from Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK, and any European countries
- Divorce or death certificate if either of you were previously married
Once you arrive in Fiji, you’ll also need to show the original copies of all of these documents! There are some more requirements that can depend on which country you’re coming from, so be sure to read about it on the Embassy website.
When you get your marriage license, you’ll need a celebrant and at least two witnesses who are 21 or older. A celebrant can be someone who works in the Marriage Registry and is an official civil marriage celebrant, or, if you’re having a religious ceremony, you can have a religious official, like a minister, perform the ceremony. The celebrant and your two witnesses will sign the marriage certificate, and then it will be filed at the Registrars office!
Many couples who elope abroad decide to do the paperwork at home – this is often easier than navigating international marriage laws, and can allow you to focus on the fun part on the actual elopement day!
Can foreigners elope in Fiji?
Yes! Wherever you come from, and whatever your gender, religion or sexual orientation is, you can get legally married in Fiji!
In certain states, you can ask your county clerk the authorization to sign your wedding license abroad. If they agree, as a registered minister, my team and I will be able to legally marry you without the hassle of a legal wedding ceremony in Fiji.

Customary Land Ownership and Village Approval
For 2026-2027, elopements in Fiji are primarily influenced by customary land ownership. Many beaches, islands, and inland landscapes are not privately owned in the Western sense but belong to local villages under traditional stewardship. Even when a location looks public, explicit village or landowner permission may be required for ceremonies and professional photography.
For couples planning a Fiji elopement in 2026-2027, working with locations that have clear agreements in place or obtaining proper local approval is essential. Respecting customary protocols ensures a smooth experience and honors the communities that care for the land.

When to plan your Fiji elopement
Here’s what you can expect throughout the year, and some things to consider when you decide on a date for your Fiji elopement!
For rain lovers – Winter
Temperatures are pretty stable throughout the year in Fiji, so the main difference in weather will be the rain! Winter is the rainiest season, so you’ll definitely need to bring waterproof gear. This is the least popular time to visit, so it can give you the chance to get the views to yourself.
To avoid crowds – Spring
The rainy season ends in April, but spring weather can be a little unpredictable. Spring is a great time to elope in Fiji if you want to avoid crowds, because summer is when the peak begins!

For the best weather – Summer
Because it’s the driest time of year, summer brings lots of visitors to the islands of Fiji. You’ll need to plan ahead to avoid crowds, but the weather is pretty ideal!
The best season – Fall
After early September, there are fewer crowds around, and this can be another great time to tie the knot in Fiji. Rainy season usually begins in October or November, so be prepared for a few showers!

What to wear when eloping in Fiji
The dress
Comfort is so important, so when you decide on a dress, opt for styles that have looser skirts – these are much easier to walk in, and will be more comfortable for any adventure. Make sure you can sit, hike, and move around easily!
The shoes
Especially in the rainy season, waterproof shoes are so important. Hiking boots are the best option if you plan to hit the trails, but make sure to break them in if you get new ones for the big day!
The suit
Suits make layering easy, and since Fiji is warm year round you might opt for nice pants and a button up. Make sure your suit is comfortable and fits you well, and that you can adventure without worrying about it!
Typical food and dishes from Fiji
You might want to integrate into your elopement day

Kokoda
Kokoda is Fiji’s version of ceviche, made from fresh fish marinated in lemon or lime juice and mixed with coconut milk, onions, tomatoes, and sometimes chillies. This refreshing dish embodies the flavors of the Pacific, offering a cool, creamy texture with just the right amount of tang and spice, perfect for enjoying on a warm Fijian day.
Lovo
Lovo refers to a traditional Fijian method of cooking, similar to an underground oven, where meat, fish, and vegetables are wrapped in banana leaves and slow-cooked over hot stones. This cooking process imparts a unique smoky flavor and results in incredibly tender food. Lovo is often prepared for special occasions and gatherings, making it a festive and communal dining experience

Cassava Cake
The Cassava Cake is a popular Fijian dessert made from grated cassava (a root vegetable), coconut milk, and sugar, sometimes enhanced with a hint of vanilla or coconut caramel. Baked until golden brown, this cake offers a dense, slightly chewy texture and a rich, sweet flavor that makes it a beloved treat in Fijian households and a must-try for visitors.

Ready to leave and explore Fiji? Here are some of my last bits of knowledge.
Tips for renting a car
Renting a car in Fiji can be a practical option if you plan to explore beyond the confines of your resort or the immediate area around Nadi and Suva. While Fiji’s main islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, have some public transport, a rental car gives you the freedom to discover remote villages, hidden waterfalls, and secluded beaches at your own pace. Roads around the major towns are generally well-maintained, though more rural roads can be rougher. Renting a car allows for spontaneous day trips and deeper exploration into the less touristy parts of the islands, offering a more authentic experience of Fijian life.
Prepare your packing list in advance
When packing for an elopement in Fiji, prioritize lightweight, breathable clothing to stay comfortable in the tropical climate. Include swimwear, a snorkel set if you plan to explore the reefs on your own, and a cover-up for quick transitions from beach to cafe. Sun protection is crucial, so don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and strong sunscreen. For footwear, water shoes are useful for rocky or coral-filled waters, and a pair of sandals or flip-flops is perfect for the beach. Since rain showers are common, especially during the wet season, pack a light raincoat or umbrella. Lastly, bring a sturdy bag for day trips and any necessary adapters for charging devices, as Fiji uses the Australian plug type.

The Fijian traditionnal greeting
A fun and important cultural etiquette to remember when visiting Fiji involves a traditional greeting known as the ‘Bula’ spirit. ‘Bula’ is used universally throughout the islands as a greeting that means hello but also conveys a wish for health and life. Embracing this greeting with a smile is a simple way to show respect and connect with locals. Additionally, when visiting villages, it’s customary to bring a small gift, or ‘sevusevu,’ usually kava root, which is presented to the village chief. This gesture is a significant part of Fijian protocol and helps build a rapport with local communities, enriching your cultural experience in Fiji.
