Why couples choose Torshavn for their elopement
Torshavn is the Faroe Islands’ small, windswept capital, and it punches well above its size as an elopement backdrop. The old town of Tinganes sits on a narrow peninsula, all turf-roofed wooden houses and winding paths that have barely changed in centuries. Walk five minutes and you are on a cliff looking out to the North Atlantic. Drive thirty and you are deep inside a landscape that looks genuinely unlike anywhere else on Earth.
For couples who want intimacy without isolation, Torshavn is the answer. You can get ready in a proper Airbnb with a harbour view, do your first look in a cobblestone alley, and still be standing at a remote waterfall gorge for your vows before midnight.
Helen and Glenn added an Iceland engagement day the day before, which meant two completely different landscapes in 48 hours, south coast black sand beaches in the morning, Torshavn old town the next. That combination is one of the most requested multi-country elopement trips I plan.

You wake up in a Torshavn Airbnb with the harbour right outside your window. Hair and makeup happens at your own pace, with nobody hurrying you along. When you step outside in your dress or suit, the old town is your backdrop before the real adventure begins.
The first look in Torshavn old town
Tinganes, Torshavn’s historic peninsula, is one of the most photographically striking spots in the North Atlantic. Turf-roofed red houses, narrow lanes, wooden pilings over the harbour. Most couples choose this for their first look, that first private moment of seeing each other before the day unfolds.
Beyond Torshavn: remote settlements and Faroese valleys
After the old town session, we drive into the interior. The Faroe Islands compress an extraordinary variety of landscapes into a very small geography: grass-roofed villages where the sheep outnumber the residents, U-shaped valleys carved by glaciers, cliffs that drop straight to the sea. Each stop is chosen for the quality of light, the level of terrain you are comfortable with, and the weather on the day.
The Torshavn elopement ceremony: vows at the gorge
Helen and Glenn hiked to their ceremony spot in the late evening. The Faroe Islands in summer means light well past 10 PM, so the timing worked perfectly. The wind carried their vows, the waterfall provided the soundtrack, and the surrounding cliffs made it feel entirely private, just the two of them and the landscape. No venue fee, no guest list, no performance. Just the promise.

Torshavn elopement: your questions answered
Is Torshavn a good base for an elopement?
Yes, and it is often underestimated. Torshavn has direct flights from Copenhagen, Reykjavik, and several UK airports, proper accommodation options including characterful Airbnbs with harbour views, and good restaurants. The old town is walkable from most accommodation. From Torshavn you can reach almost any location on the main island within 30 to 45 minutes, which makes it ideal for a full day of moving between locations without long drives eating into shooting time.
Do you need permits for a Torshavn elopement?
The Faroe Islands do not currently require permits for photography at most outdoor locations. For a symbolic ceremony (which is the most common choice for elopements in the Faroes), there are no formal authorisations required. If you need a legally binding ceremony, the paperwork process is handled in your home country before or after the trip. I explain all of this in detail in my Faroe Islands elopement guide.
What is the best time of year for a Faroe Islands elopement?
Late May through August gives you the longest light, including the near-midnight sun that made Helen and Glenn’s ceremony possible. June and July are the peak, with light lasting until well past 11 PM. September offers dramatic moody skies and fewer visitors. Winter is possible for the experienced adventurer and gives a very different, darker atmosphere. Weather is unpredictable year-round, which is why every itinerary I build includes backup plans.
Can you combine a Torshavn elopement with Iceland?
Absolutely. Atlantic Airways connects Reykjavik and Torshavn in under two hours. The combination Helen and Glenn chose, one day in Iceland for the engagement session and one day in the Faroe Islands for the ceremony, is one of the trips I recommend most often.
