Chelsea and Sebastian chose the Swiss Alps as the backdrop for their vows. What unfolded was 8 hours of alpine light, private train rides, waterfall walks, and a sunset ceremony above the clouds.
Why Lauterbrunnen for an Elopement?
The Lauterbrunnen valley sits at the heart of the Bernese Oberland, surrounded by 72 waterfalls and peaks that hit 4,000 meters. It is one of the most photogenic places in Switzerland for an elopement, and one of the least used. Most couples who come to the Swiss Alps gravitate toward the same lake-view terraces and postcard spots. Chelsea and Sebastian wanted something different: a full day that moved through the valley, climbed above it, and ended at the summit as the light went gold.
That is exactly what a Lauterbrunnen elopement can be when it is properly planned. The valley floor, the rack railway, the cable car, the alpine meadows at the top, all stitched together into a single day that reads more like an expedition than a wedding.
How a Lauterbrunnen Elopement Day Actually Unfolds
Morning: getting ready above the valley
Chelsea and Sebastian started their day at a mountain hotel perched above the valley. From their window, the Lauterbrunnen valley stretched below them in the early morning mist. Getting ready shots in that kind of light, altitude and anticipation mixed together, tend to be some of the most understated and honest moments of the whole day.
Midday: descending into the valley
They took the cable car and then the rack railway down, stopping to wander through Wengen and along the valley floor. The original plan included a shoot by the lake. Once they were down in the valley, surrounded by its scale and the sound of the waterfalls, that plan quietly dissolved. They spent the time moving through the landscape instead, which gave the photos something more alive.
Late afternoon: back up to the summit
The climb back up is where a Lauterbrunnen elopement earns its altitude. The cable car delivers you to a ridge above the cloud line. From there, you walk out to the ceremony spot as the light starts to shift toward gold. This is why timing the ascent matters: you want to arrive at the top with the sun still above the horizon.
Sunset ceremony and blue hour
Chelsea and Sebastian exchanged their vows as the sun touched the western ridge of the Bernese Oberland. The mountains caught the last light while the valley below filled with blue shadow. By the time they finished their portraits, the sky above Lauterbrunnen had turned a deep, layered indigo. It is one of those moments that photographs and also stays with you in a way photographs cannot fully hold.

When the Plan Changes for the Better
We had a lake visit penciled into the itinerary for midday. Once we were down in the valley and surrounded by the scale of it, the waterfalls, the cliff walls, the meadow light, it became obvious that staying and wandering was the right call. The lake could wait. The valley was doing things with the light that wouldn’t last.

When something better presents itself, you take it. That afternoon in the valley produced some of the most quietly extraordinary images from the whole day.
