Sonya grew up with ties to this part of Portugal, and Kevin had never been. The Sintra National Park, Cascais, and the surrounding coastline were the backdrop they had always imagined. And when the National Park closed on the morning of their wedding day due to wildfire risk, their day did not fall apart. It became a better story.
How Their Sintra Elopement Came Together
Sonya and Kevin got in touch while planning a trip to Portugal. Sonya’s family had lived in Cascais when she was young, and eloping here meant returning to a place she already loved. They were not sure exactly where they wanted to hold their ceremony, so we spent several weeks reviewing location options together: sandy Atlantic beaches, eucalyptus forests, clifftop lookouts, and castle ruins.
They settled on the Moorish Castle, the medieval fortification that runs along the ridge of the Sintra mountains, overlooking the town, the ocean, and the red rooftops of the Pena Palace. It offered a ceremony backdrop unlike anywhere else in Europe: ancient battlements, sweeping views, and a place so cinematically dramatic you almost feel you are inside a scene from history.
On the morning of their elopement, the Sintra National Park Agency called. A high fire risk had closed the entire park to visitors. The ceremony at the Moorish Castle was no longer possible.
We spent the morning in Cascais as planned, photographing the cobblestoned streets, the azulejo tiles, the narrow alleys facing the harbor. While Sonya and Kevin walked and laughed, we looked at every accessible location nearby. In the afternoon, they chose the National Palace of Sintra as their new ceremony site. A royal residence built in the 10th century, with conical chimneys rising above the town, and an interior courtyard where the light comes in golden and low at the end of the day.
It was not their original plan. It was better.
When the National Park closed hours before the ceremony, Sonya and Kevin did not panic. They trusted the process, stayed present with each other, and made a decision calmly. That is exactly how the best elopements work: when you build flexibility into your planning, a closed mountain road becomes the route to a national palace. The original location is never the whole story.

What a Full-Day Sintra Elopement Looks Like
This itinerary gives you a real sense of the pace and shape of the day. Every elopement we plan is built around the couple’s priorities, the light, and the season, but this timeline is a useful starting point for imagining your own.
- 2:00 pm Meeting at the hotel in Cascais. First introductions, kit check, and a quick walk to settle into the rhythm of the day.
- 2:00 – 4:00 pm Photoshoot through the streets of Cascais: the harbor, azulejo-tiled walls, fishing village alleyways, and the Atlantic-facing promenade.
- 4:00 – 4:15 pm Transfer by private car toward Sintra. The mountain road through the National Park is part of the experience.
- 4:45 – 6:15 pm Early dinner at a restaurant in the area. Time to breathe, eat well, and prepare for the ceremony without rushing.
- 6:15 – 6:45 pm Drive up to the ceremony location. Golden hour begins.
- 6:45 – 7:00 pm Check-in and settling in. The guests arrive, the ceremony space is set.
- 7:00 – 8:00 pm Exploring the palace grounds and couple portraits as the sun moves toward the ocean.
- 8:00 – 8:30 pm Ceremony. Vows exchanged as the last light of the day fell across the courtyard.
- 8:30 – 8:45 pm Group photos with the six guests.
- 8:45 – 9:20 pm Final couple portraits in the blue hour light after sunset.
- 9:20 – 10:10 pm Return drive to the hotel in Cascais. End of photography coverage.

The best locations for a Sintra elopement ceremony
The Moorish Castle and Pena Palace sit inside the Sintra National Park, which is managed by Parques de Sintra. Ceremonies at these locations require advance coordination with the park authority, and access can be restricted in summer due to fire risk, high attendance, or conservation work. The National Palace of Sintra, located in the town center rather than the forest, is an alternative with a different kind of grandeur: Moorish azulejos, a medieval throne room, and an inner courtyard with remarkable evening light.

Spring (April and May) and early autumn (September and October) offer the most reliable combination of mild temperatures, manageable crowds, and strong golden hour light. Summer is busier and hotter. Winter is quieter with cooler light and the chance of mist hanging in the Sintra hills, which can produce extraordinary photographs. Most months are workable; what matters more is building your schedule around the light rather than the calendar.
