The morning: getting ready and a first look
The day started in their hotel room at 9am. Getting ready together, or side by side, is one of the most underrated moments in an elopement. Nobody is rushing you toward a ceremony. The morning belongs to you.
Allie and Troy had their first look on the island coast as the fog was still rolling in from the Atlantic. That moment — one person turning around and seeing the other for the first time that day — is always one worth photographing properly. The light was soft, the air was damp and cool, and they had nowhere else to be.
After the first look, we headed to a local market to pick up food and champagne for their picnic later in the day. A Sao Miguel elopement does not have to be serious from start to finish. The market stop was one of the moments they mentioned most in their review.
From black sand beaches to rainforest waterfalls
The afternoon moved through three completely different landscapes. First, a black sand beach where the ocean was loud and the sky was moody and grey in the best possible way. Then ocean cliffs with nothing between them and the horizon. Then, after lunch, a forest park unlike anything either of them had seen before.
Sao Miguel’s interior forests are what set this island apart from most elopement destinations. The vegetation is dense, green, dripping after rain. We found a waterfall, a tiny structure half-hidden by trees, and pathways that led somewhere new every few minutes. Allie said it felt like they had slipped into a different country.

Vows on a lava field at sunset
The original plan was to hike up to a volcano ridge. The fog was sitting at exactly ten metres that evening, which would have meant a ceremony inside a cloud with zero visibility. Instead, we traded the ridge for a lava field I knew, one that sits lower and opens directly to the sea.
The fog stayed above us like a ceiling. Down at sea level, the light was extraordinary: gold filtering through grey, lava rock black and textured under their feet, the sound of the Atlantic constant in the background. This is the kind of backup plan that only works if your photographer also knows the island well enough to find it at short notice.
Troy read his vows first. Allie cried. Then she read hers, and he cried. They opened the champagne and the fog started to lift just in time for the final light. A Sao Miguel elopement ceremony does not need to go exactly to plan to be exactly right.
