Eloping Under the Matterhorn: What This Day Looked Like
When a couple asks me about eloping in Switzerland, the Matterhorn always comes up. And for good reason. There is no mountain quite like it. The pyramid silhouette, the altitude, the silence above the treeline. It delivers every single time.
Kelly and Leah had always been drawn to the mountains. When it came to choosing where to elope, the Swiss Alps were never in question. What made their day different was the scale of it: ten guests, a mountain train ride, a ceremony beside a high-altitude lake, and a hike back down while the afternoon light turned golden on the snow.

Matterhorn Elopement Itinerary
Per my Leave No Trace policy, exact location names remain undisclosed. Every elopement itinerary is custom-built; yours will look different.
- 1:00 pm Meet at Zermatt train station. Gear check, quick briefing, and the ceremonial ticket dash.
- 1:15 pm Train ride toward the mountaintop. This is a photograph in itself: the Matterhorn growing larger through the window as the valley drops away.
- 1:35 pm Arrival at the upper station, then a 15-minute walk to the ceremony lake. Snow, silence, and altitude.
- 2:00 pm Scout the exact ceremony spot. Light, background, and how the mountain frames the moment.
- 2:15 pm Ceremony, 30 minutes. The Matterhorn does not blink. Neither will I.
- 2:45 pm Group portraits and couple portraits on the mountain.
- 3:00 pm Begin the hike back down. More portraits along the trail as the light changes.
- 5:40 pm Last descent from the upper station.
- 6:00 pm Back in Zermatt. End of photography coverage. Dinner reservations, celebrations, and the distinct feeling of having done something very right.
Amber was phenomenal throughout the entire process, truly a lovely soul inside and out. She helped us plan every detail of our special day and even built an itinerary to accommodate some of our family who are less mobile so they would be able to join. What a Matterhorn Elopement Actually Feels Like
The train ride alone is worth it. The Gornergratbahn climbs through forests, crosses open snowfields, and delivers you to a world that feels genuinely removed from everything below. By the time Kelly and Leah’s group stepped onto the platform, the mood had already shifted. This was not a regular day.
The walk to the ceremony lake is short and flat enough that guests with limited mobility can manage it, which was important to this couple. One of the things I do when planning a Matterhorn elopement is think through every member of the group, not just the couple, and build a route that works for everyone without compromising the setting.
The ceremony
Standing at altitude with the Matterhorn behind you is an experience that photographs cannot fully translate, but we try. The light at that elevation in winter is sharp and clean. The sky went a deep cobalt blue. The snow around the lake had not been touched since the last snowfall. The ceremony ran about 30 minutes, and it was quiet enough to hear the wind across the water.
After the vows, we shot portraits at several spots along the ridge while the group started the descent. The couple had the mountain almost to themselves. That is one of the specific advantages of a winter Matterhorn elopement: the crowds that fill Zermatt in summer are simply not there.
The descent and the rest of the day
The hike back down runs through open alpine terrain before re-entering the forest. The light goes golden in the late afternoon, and the Matterhorn stays visible for much of the route. We kept shooting through the descent. By the time the group reached the lower train station, everyone was flushed and happy in a way that only a good walk in cold air can produce.
The evening ended in Zermatt proper with a celebratory dinner. Car-free, quiet, and surrounded by mountains. The right place to end a day like this one.

Behind the scenes
We were all set to board the mountain train when the group realized no one had bought tickets. All ten of them. A full sprint to the ticket counter followed, and we made it with about thirty seconds to spare. The collective adrenaline from that near-miss set a surprisingly perfect tone for the rest of the day. Sometimes the small chaos is part of the story.
