A Black Beach Elopement on Iceland’s South Coast
Laur-Anne and Allan said their vows on a cliff above the black sand, chased the Northern Lights, and turned a 12-hour elopement day into a road trip they will never stop talking about.
What a Black Beach Elopement in Iceland Actually Looks Like
Iceland’s south coast is one of the most dramatic elopement settings on earth: basalt columns rising from black sand, waterfalls cutting through moss-covered cliffs, and glaciers spilling into lagoons just a short drive apart. This is what Laur-Anne and Allan chose for their elopement day, and it delivered everything they hoped for plus a few surprises along the way.
The Ceremony
Private vows on a cliff overlooking the black sand beach, under an open Icelandic sky. Just the two of them, surrounded by raw basalt and the sound of the Atlantic below.
The Road Trip
After the ceremony, we kept moving: basalt columns, a cliff church, a waterfall hike, a glacier walk, and a spontaneous night shoot when the Northern Lights appeared on the drive back.
The Planning
Every stop was timed around the best light. Every location was scouted in advance. Accommodation, logistics, and contingency plans for Icelandic weather were all handled before the day started.
The Result
92 images across a 12-hour day, covering everything from a sunrise first look with Icelandic horses to headlight portraits under the Northern Lights after midnight.
From Sunrise First Look to Northern Lights
The day started at 7:30am with Laur-Anne and Allan getting ready in their rental house, Icelandic horses grazing just outside the window. The first look happened at sunrise, which is exactly when the light on the south coast does something no studio could recreate.
After the ceremony on the cliff above the black sand, we drove along the south coast making stops wherever the landscape demanded it: basalt columns, a small cliff church, a waterfall hike that led to a glacier. Iceland kept offering more, and we kept saying yes.
By the time we reached the last black beach stop, the sun had already dipped below the hills. So we popped the champagne, watched the last light fade, and waited. At 10pm the Northern Lights appeared, and the day that was already complete became something else entirely.
Black Beach Elopement Itinerary
Exact location names stay undisclosed in line with Leave No Trace principles.
- 7:30 am Arrival. Final preparations and ambient photos at the rental house. Icelandic horses in the yard.
- 8:15 First look at sunrise. Laur-Anne comes out, Allan sees her. The light does everything.
- 8:30 Drive to the ceremony site on the cliff above the black sand beach.
- 8:45 – 9:15 Private ceremony. Vows exchanged on the cliff, ocean below, sky above.
- 9:15 – 9:45 Couple session at the basalt columns and black sand beach.
- 9:45 – 10:20 Drive to the cliffs with a stop at the small cliff church.
- 10:20 am – 12:20 pm Drive to the waterfall. Picnic sheltered in the car while the Icelandic rain made up its mind.
- 12:40 – 2:40 Hike to the waterfall and up to the glacier tongue. Two hours of raw Iceland.
- 2:40 – 3:25 Drive to the glacier lagoon.
- 3:25 – 3:45 Photo session at the glacier, ice blue and impossibly still.
- 3:45 – 4:50 Drive back toward the coast for one last black beach stop.
- 4:50 – 5:15 Photo session on the beach. Sun already low. Champagne opened instead.
- 5:30 – 10:00 Break. Dinner, rest, and watching the sky.
- 10:00 pm – midnight Northern Lights session. The day that was already whole became something that will be impossible to explain to anyone who was not there.
When the Plan Changes and Gets Better
We had a last beach stop planned for golden hour. We did not make it in time. The sun was already gone when we arrived at Stokknes, and for a moment, the day felt like it had a loose end.
So instead of leaving, we pulled over. The headlights of the van cast a soft warm glow onto the black sand. Allan and Laur-Anne stood in that light, and the photos that came from those ten minutes are some of the most intimate of the entire day.
That is the thing about a black beach elopement in Iceland: the landscape does not run out. When one thing does not go exactly to plan, something else appears. You just have to be willing to stop and let it happen.
