Dunluce Castle sits at the edge of the Antrim coast on a basalt headland above the sea. It is one of the most dramatic wedding and elopement settings in Ireland, and it earns that reputation every single time. This is the story of Dhinna and Andrew, who chose to elope here with 8 close guests for a full-day adventure across Northern Ireland.
Rain arrived before they did. It stayed for most of the day. And by the end, every photograph was better for it.
The Day
What a Dunluce Castle elopement actually looks like, hour by hour
A Dunluce Castle elopement is not one location. It is a full day across Northern Ireland’s Causeway Coast, ending at the castle itself for the ceremony on the cliffs. Below is Dhinna and Andrew’s exact itinerary, from getting-ready in the morning through dinner at the end of the night.
- 9:30 Getting ready. Bridal preparation, groom’s prep, detail photography at the accommodation.
- 11:00 I join the couple. Atmospheric portraits and documentary coverage at their accommodation before we head out.
- 12:30 First look. The groom waits. The bride walks toward him. Some of the most emotional photographs of the entire day happen here.
- 1:00 Coastal cliffs. One of the filming locations used in Game of Thrones. Dramatic basalt formations, Atlantic views, and open sky.
- 2:30 Forest park and waterfalls. Deep green, moss and mist, the sound of water. A complete contrast to the coast.
- 4:15 The Dark Hedges. The famous beech tree tunnel known as King’s Road in Game of Thrones. Otherworldly at any hour.
- 5:30 Cliffs by the castle. Pre-ceremony portraits with the Atlantic behind them before the guests gather.
- 6:30 Arrival at Dunluce Castle. Meeting guests, coordinating with the farmer who manages access, scouting the ceremony location on the cliff edge.
- 7:00 The ceremony. 30 minutes. Vows exchanged on the cliff above the sea, the castle ruins in the background, the storm rolling in behind them.
- 7:30 Group and couple portraits. Castle ruins, storm light, and a tractor ride to the ceremony site that no one expected.
- 8:45 Dinner in town. Photography coverage ends. The celebration continues.
What Actually Happened
It rained the entire day. These are the photographs.
The forecast was not kind to Dhinna and Andrew. By the time we reached the first location, the rain was steady and the wind had arrived. A different plan would have been to wait, reschedule, or find cover. That is not what happened.
They walked hand-in-hand through the downpour at the Dark Hedges, laughed in the middle of the forest, and stood at the edge of the cliffs with the Atlantic behind them and the sky turning the kind of gray that Ireland does better than anywhere else in the world.
For the ceremony, they arrived at Dunluce Castle by tractor, the farmer who manages the land ferrying the bridal party across the field to the cliff edge above the ruins. Eight guests, a stormy sky, and a ceremony that went exactly as planned: the words that mattered, said in a place that earned them.
This elopement won 5 international photography awards. The rain is in almost every frame. That is not a coincidence.
