Some elopements are beautiful. Some are adventurous. Every once in a while, one comes along that feels like it was written by the landscape itself, and this Costa Rica waterfall elopement was exactly that.
Rae and Luke chose to begin their marriage before dawn, deep in the jungle, with the sound of falling water and howler monkeys as their only witnesses. Over two extraordinary days, they moved through misty waterfalls, wildlife-filled national park trails, and golden beach sunsets, ending with a bonfire under the stars, just the three of us, talking until the fire turned to embers.
Ten images from this shoot have since gone on to win international photography awards. But what I’ll remember most is the laughter.

Costa Rica Waterfall Elopement
I’ve photographed over 300 elopements across 24 countries. I’ve stood in monsoons and blizzards, hiked through volcanic ash and salt flats. But some elopements reach you differently, not because of the scenery, but because of the people in it.
Rae is neurodivergent. So am I. There’s a particular kind of ease that comes from that shared understanding: no performance, no small talk, just presence. Within an hour of meeting in the dark jungle, we were already laughing like old friends.
We started at 3am. By the time the sun broke through the canopy and found them standing together in the mist beneath the waterfall, I already knew these images would be something extraordinary.
Day two brought a completely different energy: sun, wildlife, salt air, and the kind of unguarded joy that only shows up once the nerves have gone. We ended on the beach, around a fire that crackled and glowed orange while the waves kept time. We talked for hours. We watched the stars appear, one by one.
That fire is still burning somewhere in me.

Costa Rica holds 6% of the world’s biodiversity in less than 0.03% of its land. On this elopement, wildlife wasn’t the backdrop. It was part of the ceremony.
The second evening ended on the beach around a bonfire. No agenda, no shots left on the list, just three people and a fire and the Pacific Ocean. We talked for hours about love and adventure and the strange beautiful luck of finding your person in a world this vast.
This is why I do what I do.
